The bus carrying 48 Canadian tourists went over the edge of the road and overturned onto a field outside the village of Reckingen in canton Valais on Saturday morning, a spokesman for the Valais cantonal police said.

The German-registered bus, driven by a 73-year-old driver, had left the alpine resort of Zermatt in the morning and was headed to Austria.

The injured were taken to hospital. One person was in a very serious condition and four others suffered major injuries.

Six helicopters and 12 ambulances were called to the scene. Police said the cause of the accident was unknown.
