Basel still unshakeable at the top
Basel have held onto a comfortable lead at the top of the football table despite convincing wins from Servette and St Gallen on Sunday.
Servette beat Lugano 1-0 at home, bouncing back from their disappointing UEFA cup performance against Valencia on Thursday.
The boys from Geneva appeared to be in good shape, with morale riding high, but the fans had to wait until the second half for their team to score.
Londono delivered the goods with a direct shot to the back of the net off a free kick from Lombardo in the 62nd minute. But Servette’s joy was short lived with Lombardo being sent off two minutes later for a foul on Lugano’s Rothenbühler.
With their win Servette managed to rise up the league table to second place, five points behind Basel. Lugano dropped down to sixth spot.
St Gallen vs Sion
St Gallen, who were playing away, made light work of their opponents, Sion, winning 2-0.
The men from Eastern Switzerland played an energetic game and ran rings around the host team. Ionel Gane scored both goals, but it could have been more, with Sion’s keeper Beney doing well to save a number of forceful attempts from Di Jorio, Bieli and Gane.
Sunday’s action puts St Gallen in third spot with Sion languishing in seventh.
During play on Saturday Basel beat Zurich 1-0 and Grasshoppers drew with Young Boys Bern 1-1.
