Easy win for Hingis
Top Swiss tennis woman Martina Hingis demolished South Africa's Amanda Coetzer 6-1 6-0 on Sunday to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
The former world number stole one of her easiest ever victories on the Melbourne Park centre court in just 44 minutes.
The 21-year-old Hingis, appearing in only her second tournament since an ankle surgery last October, lost only 24 points in the entire match and is yet to drop a set in the tournament. She has lost just two sets in her last two matches.
“I played really well,” Hingis told the media. “I’ve played her (Coetzer) in the past and lost to her, so I knew I would have to play well to beat her.”
As a teenager, Hingis won five grand slam titles, including three consecutive Australian Opens, but she hasn’t won a major in three years. She lost her number one ranking last year when she tore three ligaments in her left ankle but has made a strong return to the game, winning last week’s Sydney International to warm-up for the Australian Open.
Hingis will be playing Adriana Serra Zanetti in the quarter-finals, after the unseeded Italian beat Slovakia’s Martina Sucha.
