Federer through to third round at Indian Wells
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has won his second-round tie at the ATP Masters tournament in Indian Wells.
Federer beat Austria’s Stefan Koubek in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to proceed through to the third round.
But there was disappointment for Federer’s Swiss compatriot, Michel Kratochvil, who was knocked out of the same tournament after suffering defeat at the hands of Chilean rival Marcelo Rios.
Kratochvil, who had been expected to perform well after sensationally knocking out American Andre Agassi in the first round, went down to Rios in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Hingis triumphs
Meanwhile in the women’s tournament at Indian Wells, Switzerland’s Martina Hingis eased through to the semi-finals after notching up a two-set victory over her quarter-final opponent Amanda Coetzer.
The current world number four took only an hour to demolish the South African player 6-1, 6-2, and book her place in the semi-finals against former champion Monica Seles.
Thursday’s other semi-final tie will see Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova take on the unseeded Swiss, Emmanuelle Gagliardi.
