Fribourg through to ice hockey playoffs
In a nail-biting day of Swiss ice hockey, Fribourg and Rapperswil-Jona have succeeded in scraping through to the national first division ice hockey play- offs.
Langau and Ambri, on the other hand have lost their battles to get into the playoffs and now go through to the relegation playouts.
In a a day of top quality ice hockey Davos thrashed Lugano 5:1, Zug squashed La Chaux-de-Fonds 7:1 and Ambri beat Chur 4:3.
However, the real tension came from Fribourg and Langau who went into their final games with 40 points apiece.
The requirements were simple; Langau needed to win by one point more than Fribourg to avoid the relegation play-offs. But at the end of the day Fribourg’s performance meant Langau lost their battle.
Fribourg beat Rapperswil-Jona 5:4 with Gil Montandon scoring the decisive goal clinching the Fribourg victory 142 seconds before the final whistle.
Langau played an excellent game thrashing the second ranked Zurich Lions 3:0, but it still wasn’t enough to climb above Fribourg.
The result is a bitter disappointment to Langau who will now join Ambri in the play-offs. For Ambri, it ends an unsuccessful season. They had been tipped as possible title contenders but finished 10th out of 12.
The two teams will now join Chur and La Chaux-de-Fonds in the prelegation playoffs, which begin on Saturday. The quarte-finals start on Thursday.
