Swiss tennis player Ivo Heuberger is through to the main draw of the Wimbledon Championships after beating Zimbabwe's Wayne Black in the third round of qualifying.

The 25-year-old from St Gallen needed all five sets to beat his 150th ranked opponent 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.

Heuberger will join compatriots Roger Federer, Marc Rosset and Michel Kratochvil as the fourth Swiss male tennis player in the English Grand Slam event, which starts on Monday.

Heuberger last qualified for Wimbledon in 1998. But the Swiss player’s success was short-lived with Australia’s Pat Rafter knocking him out in the first round.

Elsewhere there was further good news for Swiss tennis with Bern’s Michel Kratochvil beating the Austrian Markus Hipfl in the second round of the Samsung Open in Nottingham in Britain.

The 22-year-old player, beat the Austrian after Hipfl retired due to a back injury after losing the first set 6-0 and trailing 4-2 in the second.

Kratochvil will go head-to-head with Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals, after the American beat the Zimbabwean grass-court veteran , Byron Black, in straight sets.

It was a different story however in the Netherlands at the Heineken Trophy, where Switzerland did not fare as well.

The Swiss player, Yves Allegro was knocked out in the second round by Belgium’s Xavier Malisse in straight sets.
