Hingis crashes out of Miami
Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis has been swept off the court in the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Key Biscayne.
The eighth-seeded American Serena Williams overpowered Hingis in both sets and beat the Swiss world number four 6-4, 6-0 in less than one hour.
Hingis’ play showed weaknesses right from the beginning of the match as it took her six games to break the American’s serve in the first set. Shortly afterwards, the 21-year-old missed another chance and lost her serve.
“It was frustrating. I missed so many good opportunities,” she said after the match.
However, Hingis is still upbeat about this year’s performance and reacted rather annoyed when a South American journalist asked her whether she still felt capable of regaining her strength and win another Grand Slam tournaments.
“How could you ask such a question?” Hingis said outraged. “In Melbourne I was only one point short. I am very pleased with my performance this year and I know that I have to work a bit harder to beat the top players.”
Sister Act
With her victory over Hingis, Williams has advanced to another sibling showdown against her older sister by 15 months, who beat Russian player Elena Dementieva on Tuesday.
The two sisters will face each other in the semi-finals of the Miami Tournament on Thursday. They will meet for the first time since Venus beat Serena in last year’s US Open final.
