Hoffman wins Europa Cup title

Flying high: Hoffmann is one of Switzerland's big future hopes Keystone Archive

Graubünden's Ambrosi Hoffmann has become the first Swiss skier in seven years to win the men's overall Europa Cup title.

The European tournament involves mainly young athletes on the fringe of World Cup competition, and has acted as a springboard in the careers of many of the world’s top skiers.

On Wednesday, the 24-year-old Hoffmann finished third in the final super-G race of the season to clinch the overall title. It was his second title of the season, having already made sure of top spot in the downhill discipline.

If Hoffmann had managed second place on Wednesday, he would have also been able to add the overall super-G crown to his list of achievements. Nevertheless, his two titles are enough to guarantee him a fixed World Cup start place in two disciplines throughout next season.

In the women’s Europa Cup competition, canton Valais skier Lilian Kummer has already made sure of the overall super-G title and is also a contender for the overall women’s title.
