Kratochvil beaten in first round of ATP tournament
Bern's Michel Kratochvil has lost his first-round match of the ATP tournament in Scottsdale, USA against Spain's German Puentes, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The 21-year-old Swiss number three (ATP 78) made a strong start against Puentes (ATP 103), comfortably winning the first set 1-6.
But the Spaniard fought back in the second set, taking Kratochvil to a 7-5 tie-break, before going on to win the third set and thus the match.
Kratochvil’s defeat mirrors his performance at the ATP tournament in San Jose, when he made a strong start against top seed Andre Agassi in the opening set but then went on to lose the match.
Puentes’ victory in Scottsdale is his first success on court this year. He now goes on to play Britain’s Tim Henman in the second round.
