Meier secures late ticket

Meier can now get her skates on for Salt Lake Keystone

Swiss figure skater Sarah Meier has made sure of a last minute place at the Winter Olympics after successfully passing a performance test in Zurich.

The Swiss Olympic Association asked Meier, who suffered a sprained ankle that put her out of action late last year, to take the test to qualify for the Games.

The 17-year-old showed a nearly faultless performance by missing only one triple flip during Thursday’s four-minute programme in the ice rink in Zurich-Oerlikon.

“Her performance was certainly better than in the European Championships,” the representative of Swiss Olympic, Hans Babst, said after the test. “We have always known that she has potential.”

Switzerland will now be represented in three Olympic figure skating disciplines, with Stéphane Lambiel taking part in the men’s competition and brother-sister team Daniel and Eliane Hugentobler competing in the ice dance.

No Swiss are entered in the pairs competition.
