No worries for Hingis

Hingis eased to victory on Monday Keystone

Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis has cruised through to the second round of the Australian Open with a straight sets win (6-2, 6-2) over France's Virginie Razzano.

The world number 88 succeeded in breaking Hingis early on in Monday’s match but following that slight wobble, the Swiss number one never looked in danger of being upset.

Playing almost effortlessly from the baseline, Hingis (WTA 4) saw her task made all the easier by an apparent injury to Razzano, who received treatment on her legs midway through the first set.

Breaking her opponent five times in total, Hingis raced through the first round match in just 62 minutes.

A little nervous

“I love every time I walk out there,” Hingis said of the Grand Slam tournament at which she is a three-time former champion. “The first round is always tough and I was a little nervous at first so I’m happy to get through.”

In the second round the Swiss player is now due to meet German qualifier Greta Arn (WTA 121).

Following her title win in Sydney last week, the former world number one is looking to end a three-year Grand Slam drought.

Hingis’s possible route to the final was made a good deal easier on the eve of the prestigious tournament when fifth seeded American Serena Williams was forced to pull out injured.

Hingis had been on course to meet the younger of the two Williams sisters in the quarter-finals.
