Servette continue Swiss buy-up
UEFA Cup contenders Servette Geneva have acquired a full set of Swiss international midfielders after adding Massimo Lombardo to their squad.
The 29-year-old, who has played 12 times for Switzerland, is set to join up with international team-mates Sébastien Fournier, Johan Lonfat and Alexandre Comisetti in a formidable-looking midfield after leaving Lake Geneva rivals Lausanne.
The current Servette side also boasts Swiss international striker Alex Frei as well as former Swiss defender Stefan Wolf and international fringe players Christophe Jaquet and Léonard Thurre, both of whom have played three matches each for Switzerland.
Having left behind the relegation worries of Lausanne, Lombardo now faces a different type of challenge with Servette taking on some tough tasks both at home and abroad.
Domestically, Lucien Favre’s team are set to start the springtime championship round in fifth place, with a six-point gap to close on leaders Basel.
European hopes
Before returning to league action, though, Servette must first take on Spanish giants Valencia in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.
In December Servette became the first Swiss team in 12 years to stretch a European campaign past the winter after seeing off Slavia Prague, Real Zaragoza and Hertha Berlin.
Lombardo and his new team-mates are expected to find the going tough in February though against a Valencia side which has reached the last two finals of the prestigious European Champions League.
