St Gallen curling winners
St Gallen became Swiss curling champions on Saturday, after beating Biel 9:6 in the final games of the season in Arlesheim.
The defeat after a tough game will have come as a blow to Biel Touring, who won a bronze medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Ralph Stöckli’s side will now have to focus on training for the world championships in Winnipeg in 2003, when St Gallen will represent Switzerland. A strong performance at Winnipeg will mean the chance of winning internal qualifying points for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
Victory was also on the cards for women’s side Bern II, who defeated Salt Lake medallists, Bern AAM, 7-5.
The game was also seen as a battle of strength between the two skips and former team-mates, AAM’s Luzia Ebnöter and Bern II’s Nicole Strausak, who took silver in the World Championships in 2000.
