(AP) — Walter Stürm, who achieved near cult status in Switzerland as the “jailbreak king,” was found dead in his cell Monday, police said.
Stürm, 57, who escaped from prison ten times over the years, had apparently suffocated with a garbage bag, officials said. The Medical Forensic Institute of St. Gallen was examining the body to determine the cause of death.
Police said Stürm left no indication that he was planning to commit suicide.
He had been under arrest since last March on suspicion of taking part in a SFr100,000 ($68,000) armed robbery of a bank along with an escaped convict.
He had enjoyed about six months of freedom prior to his arrest last March. He had been released from prison last October after serving a 10-year sentence for robbery.
Stürm would typically leave teasing messages behind when he escaped from prison. “Gone looking for Easter eggs” was one.
