Education accord with EU moves closer

Switzerland is on its way to participating in the European Union's education programmes, after initialling an agreement in Luxembourg.

The interior ministry said in a statement that Switzerland would take part in the EU’s Lifelong Learning and Youth in Action programmes, which run until the end of 2013.

Switzerland will contribute SFr77 million ($72 million) for its three-year involvement starting in 2011.

The programmes are designed to promote student exchanges and allow professionals to gain experience abroad.

Swiss educational institutions will also be empowered to launch projects within the schemes.

The cabinet and parliament must still grant their approval before Swiss participation can go ahead.
