Federer and Chiudinelli win ATP awards

World tennis number one Roger Federer has picked up three trophies at the ATP World Tour Awards 2009.

The 28-year-old from Switzerland won the Player of the Year Award for the fifth time, the Fans’ Favourite Award for the seventh time and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award, voted on by fellow professionals, for the sixth time.

Last year Federer finally won the French Open for the first time, equalling Pete Sampras’s 14 grand slam titles, and then topped that off by winning Wimbledon the following month. He also reached the final of the Australian Open and US Open and regained the world number one ranking.

Comeback of the Year went to Switzerland’s number three player, Marco Chiudinelli, who returned from a long-lasting knee injury to climb more than 700 places in 12 months.

Chiudinelli, one month younger than his good friend Federer, started the year ranked 779th and ended it 56th, defeating players including Marat Safin, Mikhail Youzhny and Philip Kohlschreiber along the way.
