He defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 and will face James Blake of the United States on Thursday.

Wednesday's event against Berdych was a rematch of the second round tie of the 2004 Olympic tournament when Federer unexpectedly crashed out of the competition.

The Swiss star, who is set to lose his world number one ranking to Spain's Rafael Nadal on August 18, has said an Olympic medal is a top priority after failing to win a grand slam title so far this year.

Nadal and Serbia's Novak Djokovic both won their third-round matches on Wednesday and could face each other in the semifinal.

Meanwhile, Federer and his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka have qualified for the quarterfinal of the doubles competition.

They beat Russia's Dmitry Tursunov/Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-3 and will take on Mahesh Bhupathi/Leander Paes of India in the next round.
