Heuberger defeated his American opponent, Michael Russell, in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to book his place in the tournament, while Rosset also ensured his name would feature in the first-round draw by outclassing Dutchman Peter Wessels.

Two other Swiss players, Roger Federer and Michel Kratochvil, automatically qualified for the men's tournament.

If Kratochvil manages to defeat his first-round opponent, the USA's Mardy Fish, the Swiss player will have the opportunity to attempt an act of revenge in the second round against Chilean Marcelo Rios.

It was Rios who blocked Kratochvil's path at the recently completed singles tournament in Indian Wells.

In the women's singles event of the same tournament, Switzerland's Martina Hingis and compatriot Patty Schnyder are both exempt from the first round, while Marie-Gaïané Mikaelian will meet Slovakian Janette Husarova.

Emmanuelle Gagliardi, meanwhile, will have to defeat Germany's Jana Kandaar in the first round in order to guarantee for herself an on-court clash with Russia's Elena Dementieva.
