High winds fell trees and boost avalanche risk

A severe storm and high winds have toppled trees, triggered avalanches and caused power interruptions in Switzerland.

The weather held up train traffic between the municipality of Hergiswil and the city of Lucerne in central Switzerland. In canton Uri, an avalanche buried a road in the Urserental valley.

Authorities in Valais, in southwestern Switzerland, have warned skiers to stick to marked pistes on account of increased avalanche risk.

In canton Bern, gusts of up to 162 km/h led to power outages. Police there report having received 90 weather-related calls.

By Saturday morning, the situation had calmed although the runway at Geneva’s airport was closed for 20 minutes while authorities removed snow.
