The Swiss world number one tennis player, Martina Hingis, was defeated by America's Monica Seles in the semi-final of the WTA Tour in Los Angeles.

Seles stormed through to her second consecutive WTA Tour final by beating Hingis, who is suffering from a foot injury, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

After the event, Hingis said she did not have a chance against the Yugoslav-born Seles. “I just made too many mistakes in the first set,” she said.

This is the second time within one week that the Swiss player has been beaten by Seles, after the American defeated her in San Diego, where Hingis was already suffering from pain in her left foot.

Prior to her defeat on Saturday, Hingis had already announced that she would not take part in the WTA tournament in Toronto next week.

Hingis, who is also suffering from back problems, will take a break from tennis for two weeks but hopes to be fully fit for the US Open at the end of this month.
