The Olympic 200 metres and 400 metres champion, Michael Johnson, has pulled out of the prestigious Zurich athletics meeting next week. A spokeswoman said he needed time to recover from an injury sustained during the United States Olympic trials.

Johnson's spokeswoman said he would definitely not take part in the Weltklasse event next Friday.

"Rather than shuffle him back and forth to Europe, we believe it would be best if he stayed at home and trained."

Johnson, who pulled out of the 200 metres in Sacramento, California, on July 23, was due to compete in the 400 metres in Zurich.

A decision on whether he will take part in other meetings in Europe before the Olympics in Sydney will depend on the speed of his recovery.
