Kratochvil fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to Germany's Nicolas Kiefer. The loss came despite a strong start in the clay tournament, with a win over Spain's Alex Calatrava.

At the ATP men's tournament in Houston, Bastl, a three-time Davis cup player, teamed up with Georgia's Irakli Labadze to beat Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands and American Jack Waite in the doubles' quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4.
