Bastl piles more Swiss misery on Gimelstob
Switzerland's George Bastl staged a remarkable comeback at the ATP tournament in Memphis on Tuesday to complete a month of Swiss misery for America's Justin Gimelstob.
Six days before his 24th birthday, the man from New Jersey appeared to be on course to avenge his doubles defeat against Switzerland in this month’s Davis Cup first round tie.
After winning the first set against Bastl 6-1, Gimelstob found himself serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set. But the Swiss number four managed to break the American for the first time to level the set before taking it on a tie-break 7-4.
A disappointed Gimelstob was then overwhelmed by Bastl in the deciding set, as the Chicago-born Swiss player wrapped up a resilient 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory.
Bastl’s second round opponent will be the Australian doubles specialist Wayne Arthurs, currently placed 70th in the world rankings.
