Double gold for snowboarders
Switzerland have been celebrating a double triumph on the third day of competition at the FIS world snowboarding championships in Madonna di Campiglio.
Both the men’s and women’s giant parallel slalom ended in Swiss success with Gilles Jaquet and Ursula Bruhin taking the gold medals.
In the first run of the finals, Jaquet finished with the same time as Sweden’s Daniel Biveson. He then took a two-second lead in the next run to win his first world title.
The women’s ISF world champion, Ursula Bruhin, beat Karin Ruby, Olympic champion and world cup leader in the qualifications. She then easily shook off Heidi Roth of Germany, and the American Rosey Fletscher in the final.
With their two victories, Jaquet and Bruhin won precious qualifying points for the 2002 Olympic winter games in Salt Lake City. For the first time, the giant slalom will be on the programme as an official Olympic sport.
