Game over for Hürlimann

Wednesday's win over Denmark came too late for Hürlimann Keystone

Former Olympic curling champion Patrick Hürlimann has made an early exit from what is expected to be the last major tournament of his career.

Hürlimann, who struck gold at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games, was unable to steer his team towards renewed victory at this week’s world championships in Bismarck, USA.

Assisted by his Lausanne-Olympique team-mates Diego Perren, Daniel Müller and Patrik Lörtscher, Hürlimann was on Wednesday able to complete a 9-4 win over Denmark. But subsequent wins for Norway and Canada ended the Swiss team’s hopes of a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.

Women stay in chase

The Swiss women’s team, skippered by Manuela Kormann, are still in the running for a place in the last four after also enjoying a win over Denmark.

The side from Zug beat the two-time world championship bronze medallists 7-5 in the penultimate round to leave the Swiss tied in fourth place with Canada, Russia and the Danes.

To book themselves a place in the tie-break for the semi-finals, though, Kormann’s team will have to overcome a strong Scotland side who have already made sure of their berth with seven qualifying round victories from eight matches.
