Grasshoppers scale league table

The fight between Servette (in red) and Grasshoppers was not balanced Keystone

Grasshoppers have defeated Servette 3-0 at home, ending the Geneva team's four-month winning streak.

Servette, who were playing without Sébastien Fournier and Johann Lonfat, were unable to counter the Zurich offensive. They suffered their first defeat since July 11.

Luca Ippoliti scored the first goal for Grasshoppers, after 19 minutes of play. With two additional goals, Richard Nuñez finished digging Servette’s grave.

Sunday’s victory has allowed Grasshoppers to take the sixth position in the league table, together with Young Boys. The Zurich team are now two points away from Servette and Lugano.

Other matches

Both matches opposing Lugano-St Gallen and Neuchâtel Xamas-Zurich ended in a 1-1 draw.

Neuchâtel had no choice but to win Sunday’s home game to avoid a likely relegation. They are now tenth in the overall standings.

Despite a goal from Alex, who brought the score back to one-all after 72 minutes of play, Neuchâtel were unable to impose their game. Xamas players Thimothée Atouba and Augustine Simo were not up their usual standard of play.

With 34 points, Basel stays at the top of the table – four points ahead of Sion and St Gallen.
