Handballers sail through second Faroe test

Switzerland's national handball team have enjoyed a comfortable victory over the Faroe Islands in their second European qualifying match against the tiny Danish territory.

Arno Ehret’s side came in for criticism in the Swiss press on Friday after winning their first match against the Islanders by an embarrassingly narrow three-goal margin. On Saturday the side responded in style, romping to a 35-18 win.

Captain Robbie Kostadinovich led his team by example, scoring 11 goals in an almost flawless performance.

The two victories in Torshavn have put Switzerland’s hopes of qualifying for the 2002 European Championships back on track. But the toughest challenge now lies ahead of the team, who have two matches next week against the former World Champions of Romania.

On Wednesday the Swiss players travel to Oradea for their first meeting with the Romanians. Four days later the Romanians come to Aarau for what is likely to be the decisive encounter.
