Lucerne have lifted themselves off the bottom of the football table after clinching their second victory within four days.

Following Saturday’s shock 2-1 win over defending champions Grasshoppers Zurich, Raimondo Ponte’s men made it two in a row on Tuesday with another 2-1 scoreline, this time against Aarau.

Currently battling for their financial future as well as their footballing one, Lucerne were the more attacking of the two teams, taking a 26th minute lead through Alexandre Monteiro. Shortly after the break, Aarau midfielder Elvier Melunovic grabbed an equaliser for the visitors. But with just four minutes remaining the side from central Switzerland completed a deserved win with a goal from Argentinian player Julio Alcorsé.

The victory was enough to take Lucerne two points clear of fellow strugglers Lausanne although both teams remain well on course for a relegation battle. Above them, the rest of the Swiss league is looking to close to call, however with just six points separating leaders Basel from ninth placed FC Zurich.
