Lüthi on podium at Netherlands Grand Prix

Swiss motocyclist Thomas Lüthi has come third in the Moto2 category at the Netherlands Grand Prix, more than five seconds behind the winner, Andrea Iannone of Italy.

Iannone had led from the first round of Saturday’s race, and for most of the time Lüthi looked likely to have to settle for fourth place, as Toni Elias of Spain battled it out with Ratthapark Wilairot of Thailand.

It was only in the final round that Lüthi pushed the Thai into fourth position, to take a place on the podium.

Lüthi, who is 23, was world champion in the 125cc class in 2005 and started racing 250cc – the predecessor of Moto2 – in 2007. He last won a race in 2006.

After six races out of 17 this year, Lüthi stands third, with Elias first, and Shoya Tomizawa of Japan second. Iannone is in fourth place.
