The Swiss tennis player, Patty Schnyder, has reached the quarterfinals of the New Haven WTA tournament, after beating the Russian Elena Dementieva.

Schnyder had an abysmal start to the match, winning just one game in the first set. Her recovery began in the second, which she eventually took in a tie-break. By the third, she was well in control, and ended the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The 21-year-old from Basel now faces the Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams. Schnyder has lost to Williams twice in the past: at the Australian Open in 1988, and the Munich Grand Slam final in the same year.

Meanwhile, the fixtures for the US Open were drawn on Wednesday. The Swiss world number one seed, Martina Hingis, will come up against the Russian, Alina Jidkova, in the first round of the Open.

Hingis’s compatriot, Emmanuelle Gagliardi, will play Jennifer Capriati in the first round, while Switzerland’s Miroslava Vavrinec will be pitted against Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia.

Schnyder, on the other hand, will be up against a qualifier, as will Switzerland’s top men’s player, Marc Rosset.

Roger Federer has been drawn to play the Dutchman, Peter Wessels, while George Bastl will have to deal with the Australian, Richard Fromberg, in the first round.
