Swiss tennis players rebound after Australian losses
Switzerland's top tennis players got off to a good start in their first tournaments after their unsuccessful forays at the Australian Open. Marc Rosset and Roger Federer won their first matches at the Milan Indoors, while Martina Hingis made short work of her opponent in Tokyo.
Basel’s Federer had an easy start to at the Milan Indoors, defeating Germany’s Rainer Schüttler in the first round. The seventh seed won in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Geneva’s Marc Rosset also made it through to the second round of the tournament. The eighth seed had a hard time of it, though, needing three sets to beat Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Rosset will face Britain’s Greg Rusedski next as he pursues his search for the 16th title of his career. The Swiss player is the tournament’s defending champion.
In Tokyo, Martina Hingis started her defence of her Pan-Pacific title by defeating Zimbabwe’s Cara Black. The world number one took the match in two easy sets, 6-3, 6-3.
