Speaking of inequalities, I'm going to talk to you about the return of children from abroad. We're a family with 3 children and we've spent several years living in different countries. As there are very few Swiss schools abroad, we put our children in the French system, which we felt was the most flexible.
However, over the years, the rectors of Swiss universities have tightened their conditions with regard to the French bac. Today, if you take a French baccalauréat, and you don't choose the maths AND physics or biology options, you can't get into any Swiss university or haute école.
The result is that if your child doesn't like maths or science, but rather languages, Latin or history, they are forced to study elsewhere.
For a country that advertises its universities, that's pretty ugly.
For the teenagers concerned, it means that they can't return to Switzerland until they have a Bachelor's degree.
As far as we're concerned, we went back to Geneva so that our son could join the Swiss system and escape these conditions.
I met members of the Department of Education who told me about the distress of families returning from abroad; I wrote to the rectors of all the Swiss universities. The same response: they don't want to make any difference.
I wrote to the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad and got the same answer: we don't want to get involved, it's none of our business.
So thank you for the young Swiss abroad.

A propos d'inégalités, je vais vous parler du retour des enfants de l'étranger. Nous sommes une famille avec 3 enfants et nous sommes partis plusieurs années dans différents pays. Comme il y a très peu d'écoles suisses à l'étranger nous avons mis nos enfants dans le système français, qui nous paraissait le plus flexible.
Or il faut savoir qu'avec les années, les rectorats des universités suisses ont durci leurs conditions vis à vis du bac français. Aujourd'hui, si vous faites un baccalauréat français, et que vous ne choisissez pas les options maths ET physique ou biologie, vous ne pouvez entrer dans aucune université suisse ni aucune haute école.
Résultat des courses: si votre enfant n'aime pas les maths, les sciences mais plutôt les langues, le latin ou l'histoire il est contraint d'aller étudier ailleurs.
Pour un pays qui fait la publicité de ses universités, c'est assez moche.
Pour les ados concernés, cela veut dire pas de retour possible en Suisse avant un Bachelor.
En ce qui nous concerne, nous sommes rentrés à Genève, afin que notre dernier puisse intégrer le système suisse et échapper à ces conditions.
J'ai rencontré des membres du département de l'instruction publique qui m'ont raconté le désarroi des familles revenant de l'étranger; j'ai écrit au rectorats de toutes les universités suisses. Même réponse: on ne veut pas faire de différence.
J'ai écrit à l'organisation des suisses de l'étranger, réponse: on ne rentre pas en matière, cela ne nous concerne pas.
Donc merci pour les jeunes suisses de l'étranger.

Need someone who understands me and maybe can answer my questions.
I emigrated to southern Italy last year in March 2023, before that I lived in Zurich for 33 years.
I was born in Italy but grew up in Switzerland when I was exactly 4 months young.
I have a house and I know Italy because I always went on vacation to Italy since I was little. The typical Italo-Swiss who always went on vacation to Italy by car. I'll try to explain everything a bit briefly, as my life story is actually very long. I didn't have any parents from an early age and was brought up by my aunt and uncle. When they died I was 20 years young. So all I had left was an aunt who lives in Aargau and enjoys a very wealthy life. She has two children who are already 28 years old and have moved out. They grew up as real Swiss, don't speak Italian ecc. I have a normal relationship with you, but I don't feel comfortable with you at home, because you have a completely different mentality, which is not like mine. Because I am the typical Italian. In Italy I have an uncle and aunt that I also have a good relationship with, but they also live their lives and I live mine, finally I am alone, so I feel totally alone.
Two years ago, when I was on vacation in Italy, I met the love of my life and decided to emigrate to Italy after just one year. So I gave notice on my apartment and just under a year later I emigrated. It all happened very quickly, perhaps too quickly. I have a house here that only needs water and electricity, my car, otherwise I don't have any bills to pay. I'm doing well here. Like quality of life, I like life here better than in Switzerland, but there are many things that I'm starting to miss now, such as the fact that most things work in Switzerland, like the pharmacy, doctor's surgery and hospital, etc. That's the only thing I miss and I'm afraid of not being able to adapt here. What if something happens to my health, by the time the ambulance arrives, I always think it's too late. I start to doubt whether I've made the right decision or not.
I like the good life here that you can't have in Switzerland. Unfortunately, you can't really live your life to the full in Switzerland, because in my opinion Switzerland is very stressful, you have to concentrate too much, you have to work otherwise you can't afford an apartment, a car, etc. if you have a family, daycare for the children which costs a lot again, etc. Here in Italy, me and my partner have our own company, we can organize our days as we want and we usually sleep in in the morning. We enjoy life, from April to October you can go to the sea. I'm close to the Amalfi Coast, so there's plenty of nice things to do and we're not talking about the food, you know that everything here is TOP. Unfortunately I don't have a best friend here yet, my best friend lives in Zurich, who unfortunately hardly has time to phone because she has a 2 year old daughter and therefore hardly any time.
But I'm still afraid whether I've made the right decision, sometimes I get a feeling of fear because of the security of going back to Zurich for good.

Brauche jemand der mich versteht und vielleicht meine Fragen antworten kann.
Ich bin letztes Jahr im März 2023 nach Süd-Italien ausgewandert, vorher lebte ich 33 Jahren in Zürich.
Ich wurde in Italien geboren, aber in der Schweiz aufgewachsen, da wahr ich genau 4 Monate jung.
Ich habe ein Haus und kenne Italien, da ich seit klein auf immer nach Italien in die Ferien ging. Der Typische Italo-Schweizer der immer mit dem Auto Ferien in Italien gemacht hat. Versuche alles ein bisschen kurz zu erklären, da eigentlich meine Lebensgeschichte sehr lange ist. Ich habe keine Eltern seit klein auf, wurde bei meiner Tante und Onkel aufgezogen. Als Sie starben wahr ich 20 Jahre jung. Also blieb mir nur noch eine Tante die im Aargau wohnt und sehr wohlhabend Ihr Leben geniesst. Hat zwei Kinder die schon 28 Jahre jung sind und ausgezogen. Sie sind als richtige Schweizer aufgewachsen, können auch kein Italienisch ecc. Habe normalen Bezug mit Ihnen, aber nicht das ich mich wohl fühle bei Ihnen zu Hause, da Sie eine ganz andere Mentalität haben, die nicht wie meine ist. Da ich die Typische Italienerin bin. In Italien habe ich einen Onkel und Tante die ich auch guten Bezug haben, aber auch Sie leben Ihr Leben und ich meins, Schluss endlich bin ich alleine, also ich fühl mich total alleine.
Habe vor 2 Jahren als ich in Italien bei mir im Dorf in den Ferien wahr, die Lieben meines Lebens kennengelernt und mich nach nur einem Jahr entschieden nach Italien auszuwandern. Also habe ich meine Wohnung gekündigt und nach knapp einem Jahr später bin ich ausgewandert. Es ging alles sehr schnell vielleicht zu schnell. Ich habe hier ein Hause, das nur Wasser und Strom bezahlt werden muss, mein Auto ansonsten habe ich keine Rechnungen die ich bezahlen muss. Mir geht es hier gut. Wie Lebensqualität gefällt mir das Leben besser hier als in der Schweiz, aber es gibt vielen Sachen die ich jetzt anfange zu vermisse, wie zb. das in der Schweiz das meiste Funktioniert, wie Apotheke, Arzt Praxis und Spital ecc. das ist das einzige was mir fehlt und ich hier Angst habe mich nicht anpassen zu können. Was ist wenn mal was Gesundheitliches passiert, bis hier mal die Ambulanz kommt, denke ich immer ist es zu spät. Ich fange an zu zweifeln ob ich die richtige Entscheidung getroffen habe oder nicht.
Mir gefällt das schöne Leben hier, dass man in der Schweiz nicht machen kann. In der Schweiz kann man leider sein Leben nicht wirklich ausleben, da in der Schweiz meiner Ansicht viel Stress hat, zu konzentriert man muss arbeiten sonst kann man sich nichts leisten keine Wohnung, Auto ecc. wenn man Familie hat , Kita für Kinder das auch wieder viel kostet usw. Hier in Italien habe ich und mein Partner ein eigenes Unternehmen, wir können uns die Tage einrichten wie wir wollen und morgens schlafen wir meist aus. Geniessen das Leben, im ab April bis Oktober kann man an Meer. Ich bin in der nähe der Amalfiküste, also genug schönes um was zu unternehmen und vom Essen reden wir nicht, man weiss das hier alles TOP ist. Beste Freundin habe ich hier leider noch keine, meine beste Freundin lebt in Zürich, die leider kaum Zeit hat zu telefonieren da sie eine 2 Jährige Tochter hat und darum kaum Zeit.
Aber ich habe trotzdem Angst ob ich die richtige Entscheidung getroffen habe, manchmal vor Angst bekomme ich ein Gefühl wegen der Sicherheit wieder für immer nach Zürich zu gehen.

I am 54 years old and after 30 years in the beautiful canton of Zug I am emigrating to southern Italy, to Abbruzzo, at the end of September 2024.
All my relatives, father, brother, sister and their family, have been living in Italy since the early 90s. I don't have any other mates there, just a few acquaintances.
Of course, I don't know whether I'll be able to fulfil my dreams in Italy, i.e. find a job, find friends and my dream woman and start a family.
I've met so many people in Switzerland, Swiss and non-Swiss, and of course I'm not leaving the country because of the people. But the fact is that I am alone, have half a handful of mates that I see every few months and a website for singles that might not exist in Italy.
I'm writing here because I'm also wondering whether I've made the right decision.
Final word: I am sometimes preoccupied by what a good work colleague said to me: You have to ask yourself the profound question, what am I fleeing from? Of course I know that you can never escape from yourself :-) Best regards, A.

Fakt jedoch ist dass ich eben alein bin, eine halbe handvoll Kolegen habe die ich im Abstand von Monate sehe, sowie eine Webseite für Singles die es evtl. in Italien dafür nicht geben wird.
Schreibe hier weil auch ich mich frage ob ich doch die richtige Entscheidung getroffen habe.
Schlusswort: Beschäftigen tut mich manchmal, was ein guter Arbeitskoleg sagte zu mir: Musst dich die tiefgründige Frage stellen, vor was flüchte ich denn!! Ich weiss natürlich das man vor sich selbst nie flüchten kann :-) Liebe Grüsse, A.
The best decision while emigrating abroad (I my case to 15 countries throughout my career and retirement) was to continue the enrollment in the AHV Swiss Government Pension Scheme. Strongly recommended to all.
My children, husband and I are venturing to the USA. We are still at the very beginning of the planning. I don't think we are aware of what is in store for us. Many people do not understand the decision to emigrate, to leave the "safest, most stable" country. Many factors have encouraged us to do so. One is inflation, Switzerland is not the most child-friendly country. I as a mother am at home until the children can stay at home independently. But nobody understands the huge hole in my resume. I as a hairdresser earn 4000.- without deductions, the care of my children costs me over 2000.- per month. The KK rises and rises. Our apartment becomes more faithful for the 2nd time this year. My husband studies on the side. Sundays he has free. During the week he comes home around 22Uhr, because he st at the evening university. The air is out.
Does anyone have any good advice? I am grateful for any tip, because I am still very afraid.
Meine Kinder, Mann und ich wagen den schritt in die USA. Wir sind noch ganz am Anfang der Planung. Ich glaube uns ist gar nicht bewusst, was noch auf uns zukommen wird. Die Entscheidung auszuwandern, das "sicherste, stabilste" Land zu verlassen, verstehen viele nicht. Viele Faktoren haben uns dazu ermutigt. Zu einem die Teuerung, die Schweiz ist nicht gerade das Kinderfreundlichste Land. Ich als Mutter bin zu Hause bis die Kinder selbstständig zu Hause bleiben können. Aber das riesige Loch in meinem Lebenslauf versteht niemand. Ich als Coiffeuse verdiene 4000.- ohne Abzüge, die Betreuung meiner Kinder kostet mich über 2000.- im Monat. Die KK steigt und steigt. Unsere Wohnung wird zum 2 mal in diesem Jahr treuerer. Mein Mann studiert nebenbei. Sonntags hat er Frei. Unter der Woche kommt er gegen 22Uhr nach Hause, da er an der Abenduni st. Die Luft ist raus.
Hast jemand gute Ratschläge ? Ich bin für jeden Tip dankbar, den ich habe trotzollem grosse Angst.
I think if I were to emigrate again, I would give myself more time to settle in. For me, it wasn't the big things, the ones that are completely different than in Switzerland, that surprised me and threw me off my game. Rather, it was and is things like "the corn can has a different shape" or "toilet paper doesn't have a handle to carry it" that make me homesick. My destination country is quite well developed, but just not in everything.
I would also be better prepared psychologically for racism a second time. Although everyone agrees that racism is bad, it is still very real here. I don't have the "right" skin color, I don't have the "right" accent to get anything done with the authorities. Aid agencies often only care about people from a certain country of origin. Society is divided, whether by nationality, which island one lives on, or by ethnic heritage and skin color. European immigrants do not fit into any of these categories.
Ich denke, wenn ich nochmals auswandern würde, würde ich mir mehr Zeit lassen, mich einzuleben. Für mich waren es nicht die grossen Dinge, diejenigen die ganz anders sind als in der Schweiz, die mich überraschten und aus dem Konzept brachten. Vielmehr waren und sind es Dinge wie "die Maisdose hat eine andere Form" oder "Toilettenpapier hat keinen Haltegriff zum Transportieren", die mir Heimweh machen. Mein Zielland ist recht gut entwickelt, aber halt nicht in allem.
Ich würde mich ein zweites Mal psychisch auch besser auf den Rassissmus vorbereiten. Obwohl alle sich einig sind, dass Rassismus schlecht ist, ist er hier noch sehr real vorhanden. Ich habe nicht die "richtige" Hautfarbe, ich habe nicht den "richtigen" Akzent, um mit den Behörden etwas zu erreichen. Hilfswerke kümmern sich häufig nur um Personen eines gewissen Herkunftslandes. Die Gesellschaft ist gespalten, sei es nach Nationalität, auf welcher Insel man lebt, oder nach ethnischem Erbe und Hautfarbe. Europäische Immigrant:innen passen in keine dieser Kathegorien.

Yes love has not driven us from Switzerland but Switzerland.
During the war in Riehen our teacher in the army was a substitute from Poland with little knowledge of German. Entry into the classroom with order (one page and a drawing then you can go out to play) that meant for us to write in capital letters and a Picasso drawing on the other side, so after 15 minutes go out to play. So we did not teach German.
After the apprenticeship (Elektromechanik Sauter AG) 2 years to Copenhagen then back to Switzerland with the idea to find a selle with international connections so BBC Baden. Miserable selle but on the campus a machine is manufactured which is used for cancer patients. The Betatron inventor and head of the department of Norway. I approached him in my learned Danish and got the job in a flash.
Then an installation in London but first through a BBC German test and I forgot a coma. (comma that) too little German lessons So not London.
To Zurich into an X-ray equipment company however with 45 to 60 working hours the week and overtime not paid. After 3 years a call from BBC Galveston TX needs a specialist for the betatron. So to Galveston with wife and 2 children.
After 30 years in Galveston and 60 years old another 14 years as a Licensed Medical Physicist all over Texas checking the safety of the X-ray machines.

Ja die Liebe hat uns nicht von der Schweiz vertrieben sondern die Schweiz.
Während dem Krieg in Riehen unser Lehrer in der Armee der Ersatz von Polen mit geringen Deutsch Kenntnis. Eintritt ins Schulzimmer mit Order (eine Seite und eine Zeichnung dann könnt ihr raus zum Spielen) das hiess für uns gross schreiben und eine Picasso Zeichnung auf der anderen Seite, also nach 15 Minuten raus zum spielen. Also nicht Deutsch lehrten.

I was the happiest person in the world when I emigrated to Australia:
The land of my dreams, the love of my life..... and yet things turned out differently.
I still believe that I was quite well prepared. I traveled the country many times for several months, met people, learned the language, enjoyed the climate, celebrated festivals with "locals" and saw a lot of the country. I knew my way around. Also I was aware that emigrating is a big step, away from friends and family, from known and loved to new and unknown, after all Australia, like Switzerland, is a western country without big financial problems.
All true, but....
Despite everything, the culture of the country and the people, the values - what is important, what is not so important, the bureaucracy and the general life style is so different, I had to relearn life, even humor is different (hardly anyone understands my humor here and I am often the only one who doesn't get it when an Australian tells a joke ;-))
But thanks to a lot of support from my wife and her friends, after a few months I could start to enjoy my new life in the land of my dreams, with the love of my life.
That was in 2008 and has not changed.

Ich glaube noch immer, dass ich recht gut vorbereitet war. Ich habe das Land viele Male für mehrere Monate bereist, Menschen kennen gelernt, die Sprache gelernt, das Klima genossen, Feste mit "Locals" gefeiert und viel vom Land gesehen. Ich kannte mich aus. Auch war ich mir bewusst, dass Auswandern ein grosser Schritt ist, weg von Freunden und Familie, von bekanntem und geliebtem zu neuem und unbekannten, schlussendlich ist Australien, wie die Schweiz, ein westliches Land ohne grosse finanzielle Probleme.
Alles richtig, aber....
Trotz allem ist die Kultur des Landes und der Menschen, die Werte - was ist wichtig, was nicht so wichtig, die Bürokratie und der allgemeine Lebensstiel so unterschiedlich, ich musste das Leben neu erlernen, selbst Humor ist unterschiedlich (kaum jemand versteht meinen Humor hier und ich bin oft der einzige der nicht kapiert wenn ein Australier einen Witz erzählt ;-))
Dank viel Support meiner Frau und ihrer Freunde konnte ich aber nach ein paar Monaten anfangen, mein neues Leben im Land meiner Träume, mit der Liebe meines Lebens zu geniessen.
Das war in 2008 und hat sich nicht geändert.

First off is SwissInTouch an actual application? It isn’t available in the app store. Second I feel as this is like EnglishForum.ch. Third, words like diaspora don’t really fit my condition as a dual citizen. I don’t feel abroad per se although I am in the United States; descendant of the founding fathers of United States of America and very Anglo-Swiss. Trying to reconnect with my family in Zurich and watch moveora YouTube videos. This post is a bit more like “Sleepless in Seattle.” Zurishaddai “the almighty is my rock and strength.” My grandfather translated the first official copy of the Bible into English and I went to art school in Zurich. So during the lockdowns at home during the pandemic I grew closer to Switzerland. The greatest challenge is that I did attend school in the SF Bay Area but I am wholly Swiss. (Also Chicago and New Yorker - definitely more of a New Yorker as it was our port of entry with the original Dutch colony - my grandfather spent time in Europe during the Korea War and my sister was stationed in Germany) The pull against my heritage is hard because I have darker skin but of apostolic success of James and Moses; in Switzerland by those closest to me I was told I was Swiss. The United States of America is also being pulled further from its original purpose and I’ve been working on reconstruction and reformation pertaining to the US Constitution and studying also the Swiss federal system abroad; there are again clear overlaps. And silly little things like how highway 4 in California ends near my home and comes to a full stop in Bear Valley which is in Alpine County, California. And of course the Bears the twin flags of the California Republic and Bern. Our family is originally from Bern and Winterthur and we historically were born abroad; church missions. But the romanticism of the founding is so beautiful. Mostly been at home doing research during this tumultuous decade but definitely looking to reconnect. Zurishaddai.
It's been since 1981 that I left Switzerland, the best decision I ever made in my life. I moved to the United States, Latin America, and finally settled in Canada after one or two years. This way I was able to study English and French literature that my parents refused me in Switzerland because why pay for a girl's education? Girls are made to have children... we don't waste our money to educate them.
Then I continued my way and I became a painter, which I could never have realized in Switzerland. Now I continue to fulfill myself by going ahead with all kinds of businesses, I created my own art workshops, etc. I have never regretted it. I have never regretted leaving. I have never been homesick in over 40 years. And if I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly the same thing with a few improvements... LOL
F... k Switzerland and all its laws to prevent you from living freely and breathing. Exploring the Great North is another of my passions. Canada is freedom!

Cela fait depuis 1981 que j'ai quitté la Suisse, la meilleure décision que j'ai prise dans ma vie. J'ai roulé ma bosse aux États-Unis, en Amérique latine, pour finalement élire domicile au Canada après 1 ou 2 ans. Ainsi j'ai pu faire les études en littérature anglaise et française que mes parents me refusaient en Suisse parce que pourquoi payer des études à 1 fille? Les filles c'est fait pour faire des enfants... on gaspille pas son argent à les éduquer.
Puis j'ai continué mon chemin et je suis devenue artiste peintre, ce que jamais je n'aurais pu réaliser en Suisse. I emigrated to Central Hesse almost exactly 22 years ago. Here I met my wife. I thought the bureaucracy in Switzerland is quite heavy until I came to Germany. Also I thought a neighboring country of Switzerland in which I understand the language well and can also speak, is not so different from the mentality, as for example England etc.. But this was a big mistake. Democracy in Switzerland is given to us from an early age, so it is often not used by the individual. Community meetings are only attended when it is a matter of one's own concerns. Nevertheless, the understanding of the state is completely different.
Since there is no direct participation, one belongs to the state only indirectly and usually eyes it suspiciously. The advantage of the individual often outweighs the advantage of the common good. However, if one gets involved with the people, it is like almost everywhere in the world, beautiful communities and good relationships develop. The "German" from the Cabaret Rotstift does exist, unfortunately they are loud but also a minority. What I like most about Germany today is the vastness and the still existing space, even in urban centers. I grew up in Wallisellen at a time when there was still a covered wooden bridge to Zurich-Schwamendingen. Now there is a highway with up to 8 lanes. And every time I come to my old home, a piece of it is concreted over again. Switzerland is now too narrow and too exclusive for me. Unfortunately, I find that a pity. Nevertheless, I remain Swiss and feel very comfortable with it. Cordial greetings..
Ich bin nun vor ziemlich genau 22 Jahren nach Mittelhessen ausgewandert. Hier habe ich meine Frau kennen gelernt. Ich dachte die Bürokratie in der Schweiz ist doch ziemlich heftig bis ich nach Deutschland gekommen bin. Auch habe ich gedacht ein Nachbarland der Schweiz in der ich die Sprache gut verstehe und auch sprechen kann, ist von der Mentalität nicht so verschieden, wie z.B. England etc.. Doch dies war ein grosser Irrtum. Die Demokratie in der Schweiz wird uns von klein an mitgegeben, deshalb wird sie auch häufig vom Einzelnen nicht genutzt. Gemeindeversammlungen werden nur besucht, wenn es um eigene Belange geht. Trotzdem ist das Staatsverständnis ein völlig anderes.
Da es keine direkte Teilhabe gibt, gehört man nur indirekt zum Staat und beäugt diesen in der Regel misstrauisch. Der Vorteil des Einzelnen überwiegt häufig den Vorteil des Gemeinwohles. Wenn man sich aber auf die Menschen einlässt, ist es wie fast überall auf der Welt es entstehen schöne Gemeinschaften und gut Beziehungen. Der oder die "Deutschen" aus dem Cabaret Rotstift gibt es zwar, leider sind sie laut aber eben auch eine Minderheit. Was mir an Deutschland heute am meisten gefällt, ist die Weite und der noch vorhandene Raum, sogar in Ballungszentren. Ich bin in Wallisellen aufgewachsen zu einer Zeit als es noch eine überdachte Holzbrücke nach Zürich-Schwamendingen gab. Dort ist jetzt eine bis zu 8 Spuren führende Autobahn. Und jedes mal wenn ich in meine alte Heimat komme, ist wieder ein Stück davon zubetoniert. Die Schweiz ist mir inzwischen zu eng und zu exklusiv. Das finde ich leider schade. Trotzdem bleibe ich Schweizer und fühle mich sehr wohl damit. Herzlichi Grüess..

I emigrated to Colombia alone 11 years ago, at the age of 56. I got to know the country on a trip to South America. I was particularly taken with the Kpste. Pure Caribbean. Always a temperature I enjoy and it allows me always with shorts and T-shirt to use.
Much too dangerous, they say, even today. If one does not live remotely us normal, adapted behaves, then it goes. Our Swiss mentality does not always help everywhere. Especially when it comes to the environment, safety, responsibility.
Often, you are being asked for money. Similar to Thailand. So don't expect to get your money back. Better not to borrow, lend. That is gone.
Ich bin vor 11 Jahren, also mit 56 Jahren alleine nach Kolumbien ausgewandert. Ich habe das Land auf einer Südamerika Reise kennengelernt. Speziell angetan hat mir die Kpste. Karibik pur. Immer eine Temperatur, die ich genieße und es mir erlaubt immer mit kurzen Hosen und T-Shirt zu verwenden.
Viel zu gefährlich heißt es auch heute noch. Wenn man nicht abgelegen lebt uns sich normal, angepasst verhält, dann gehts. Unsere Schweizer Mentalität hilft nicht immer nd überall. Speziell was Umwelt, Sicherheit, Verantwortung betrifft.
Vielfach wird man angepumt wegen Geld. Ähnlich wie in Thailand auch. Also nicht erwarten, dass Du das Geld zurückbekommst. Besser nichts leihen, ausleihen. Das ist weg.

I am Canadian, born in Toronto. I moved to Zurich, Switzerland in 1998 and became a Swiss citizen in 2010. So, in a way, I am a Swiss citizen living abroad, my country of origin being Canada.
I thoroughly enjoy reading the high-quality Swiss news in English on this website. One aspect of living abroad after some years is that you begin to lose your own mother tongue. Although I have subsribed to Swiss newspapers in German, it's simply a real treat to read Swiss news in English; all of the idioms and nuances of the English language are like music to my ears!
Another experience I've had living abroad is that you become less and less interested in the politics and events in your birthplace and are much more attuned to what's going on in your new country of residence, which is why I often turn to Swissinfo.
I moved to Spain 8 years ago, after I lost my job, the end of unemployment and the prospect of social assistance...
I withdrew the capital of the pension fund that allowed me to buy a "bungalow" (semi-detached house) and live until I got the AVS. What was initially a plan B turned into a plan AAA. I gained in quality of life, financially and socially.
To integrate I learned Spanish (which I speak fluently), which allows me to manage all aspects of daily life independently. I feel at home here and cannot imagine returning to Switzerland.

- Overall positive experience.
- As in all countries, there are good and bad sides
Good sides :
- Kind, helpful natives, respectful of others. A few kind words in Portuguese can help a lot.
- Good climate
- Good cuisine (the climate favors the production of fruits and vegetables), plenty of fish, good meat
- Very affordable cost of living (with northern European income). The SMIC being about 700€x14, it is not enough to live in highly touristic areas.
- Buying a property can be done in 2 weeks (3 months in France...)
- Many government services are computerized and this facilitates certain administrative procedures (provided you understand Portuguese)
- Amazing banking system. Thanks to the Multibanco system, bill payments can be made from a cell phone or an ATM (like Bancomat)
Annoying:
- Politicians can put in place laws that are sometimes difficult to apply, because they are not always accompanied by sufficient means for the state services that are supposed to apply these laws.
- The organization of some administrations is catastrophic: SEF, IMT for example. Transforming a foreign driver's license into a Portuguese one can take months...
- Obtaining a building permit can be very long (sometimes several years...)
- Although benefiting from a very favorable sunshine, the installation of solar panels is not encouraged, even discouraged (taxes, paperwork...)
- CTT (post)... While all carriers deliver my shipments to my home, the Portuguese post office is unable to do so...
- Health, variable service. The private sector has clearly deteriorated in the last few years, perhaps a victim of its success.
- Importing 1 (not more!) car (European plates) tax free is only possible during the first 6 months of your move. After this period, the taxes can exceed the price of the car... Private imports are penalized to favor the local market. Expensive" cars can be taxed at 100% of their manufacturer's price.
- Health/accident insurance. Make sure you get the right information BEFORE you emigrate! For some Swiss people, it may seem impossible to join the Portuguese social security system because a paper is always missing and impossible to obtain (either in Switzerland or in Portugal...)
- Unless you have a lot of patience, if you don't master the Portuguese language, it is practically indispensable to find a (good... - which is not always the case...) multilingual lawyer, solicitador, accountant, etc..., to manage the administrative things.

Bons cotés :
- Autochtones gentils, serviables, respectueux d’autrui. Quelques mots gentils de portugais peuvent beaucoup aider.
- Climat bon

- Coup de la vie très abordable (avec des revenus du nord de l’Europe). Le SMIC étant à environ 700€x14, cela ne suffit plus pour vivre dans des zones fortement touristiques.
- Acheter un bien immobilier peut se faire en 2 semaines (3 mois en France…)
- Beaucoup de services de l’État sont informatisés et ça facilite certaines démarches administratives (à condition de comprendre le portugais)
- Système bancaire étonnant. Grâce au système Multibanco, les paiements de factures peuvent se faire depuis son téléphone portable ou un distributeur automatique (genre Bancomat)
Énervant :
- Les politiques peuvent mettre en place des lois parfois difficilement applicables, car pas toujours accompagnées des moyens suffisants à destinations des services de l’État supposés appliquer lesdites lois.
- L’organisation de certaines administrations est catastrophique : SEF, IMT par exemple. Transformer son permis de conduire étranger en permis de conduire portugais peut prendre des mois…
- Obtenir un permis de construire peut être très long (parfois plusieurs années…)
- Bien que bénéficiant d’un ensoleillement très favorable, l’installation de panneaux solaires n’est pas encouragée, voire même découragée (impôts, taxes, paperasses…)
- CTT (poste)… Alors que tous les transporteurs livrent mes envois à la maison, la poste portugaise en est incapable…
- Santé, service variable. Le secteur privé s’est nettement dégradé depuis quelques années, peut-être victime de son succès.
- Importer 1 (pas plus!) voiture (plaques européenne) en franchise de taxes, n’est possible que pendant les 6 premiers mois de son emménagement. Passé ce délai, les taxes peuvent dépasser le prix de la voiture… Les importations particulières sont pénalisées pour favoriser le marché local. Les voitures « chères » peuvent être taxées à 100% de leur prix constructeur.
- Assurance maladie/accident. Bien se renseigner AVANT d’émigrer ! Pour certains Suisses cela semble parfois impossible de s’affilier à la sécurité sociale portugaise car il manque toujours un papier, impossible à obtenir (soit en Suisse, soit au Portugal…)
- Sauf à s’armer de (beaucoup) de patience, si on ne maitrise pas la langue portugaise, il est pratiquement indispensable de trouver un (bon… - ce qui n’est pas toujours le cas…) avocat, solicitador, comptable, etc…, multilingue, pour gérer les choses administratives.
When I left the great Saconnex, carried by the stories of Ella Maillart, I discovered a good part of the world, and noticed that people are more welcoming when they are residents in their country of origin. En quittant le grand Saconnex , porté par les récits d'Ella Maillart ,j'ai découvert une bonne partie du monde , et constaté que les gens sont plus accueillants lorsqu'ils sont résidents dans leur pays d'origine . Aujourd'hui installé à Paris , je n'ai évidemment pas le même niveau de vie (financier) qu'en Suisse , par-contre tout s'ouvre à moi dans cette ville magnifique (théatres , culture...rencontres ...etc ...) . Born from parents both foreigners ... but born in Switzerland, country that I love and that I adored ... I won the nationality at my 14 years thanks to my mother's years! A long process, however strange when police officers come knocking at the door ... finally ... I decided three years ago to leave this country that I love so much ... because professionally, after having done my banking apprenticeship, and having touched all the jobs, it was 2-3 years that I saw nothing, no door ... that judgments! Thank you country ...... and when I arrived here ... no help, no support! I try desperately to change for example, my car plates ... it has been impossible for me until now ... to do it ... as I say ... no support ... no administrative help ... and yet I return to Switzerland to see my family, I love it so much ... but I will not go back.

Well, I lived and worked (in this order) in Switzerland, England, France, Pakistan, Afghanistan (during royal days still), Ghana, Nigeria, Switzerland, Antigua, Switzerland, Thailand, Kosovo, Cyprus, Iraq, Jordan, Switzerland and now retirement in Indonesia. As Director of Finance and Administration I not only arranged my accomodation everywhere, but also the accomodation of many of our staff. I must say that the only real challenge I had was finding accomodation in Zurich upon my retirement. All reasonable priced apartments have been occupied for years and only become vacant when the present occupant dies. Reasonable accomodation with more than 100 applicants for the same flat. Crazy. Now retired in Lombok, Indonesia, plenty of residences to choose from at affordable prices. Bye bye Switzerland.

Well most of the countries you mentioned are developing countries where you can afford cheap accommodation easily but Zurich is a city in the 1st world country group, of course it catering to low income peiple is less a case as well as people tend to stay here hence everything is occupied where in developing countries they try to flee which mean available accommodation.
Thats called downshifting trend. It was popular in 1990s.
All immigrants should be aware there are 4 phases of integration. 1. Tourist - when you first arrive. Lasts up to 6 months. 2. Negative phase - home is better. 3. Positive phase - here is better. 4. Acceptance phase - nowhere is perfect. Depending on your experiences with the locals, you can jump between phases. I'm now in Phase 4, but Phase 2 lost me friends, jobs, relationships. But everyone will go through it, more than once.

Here, in Switzerland. Many moons ago I wrote a series of articles for SwissInfo, one of which was about integration. This happened when my comments got a lot of comments (back in the day when we could comment on every article). Shame this fun section and feedback on articles got scrapped. Now, I have to wait for an interesting debate to appear, which is not often enough. When I first arrived, I did not know "Grussa". An old man said it to me, and I thought the poor man had a really bad throat. I understood later why he got angry with me, as I did not say it back. It's Swiss-German for hello. But, he was being polite, not friendly.
