It is to increase the number of surveillance cameras in both stations and regional trains.

A spokesman for the railways, Daniele Pallecchi, confirmed a report in the Sonntag newspaper that the measures would be carried out in the near future.

He said that video cameras would be installed at stations where there were many passengers in transit and at those where acts of vandalism had already occurred.

Pallecchi added that cameras would also be installed in older regional trains to complement the existing 400 now in modern rolling stock.

The Swiss Federal Railways is also considering whether to install video cameras in InterCity trains.
