Rigamonti strikes gold in Helsinki

Switzerland's Flavia Rigamonti has taken the gold medal in the 800m freestyle final on the fourth day of the European Swimming Championships in Helsinki.

The 19-year old finished in a world-class time of eight minutes 29.16 seconds to catapault her to number two in the world rankings.

There was more Swiss success with Rigamonti's training partner, Chantal Strasser, swimming to silver just over two seconds behind. Strasser's time of eight minutes 31.36 seconds saw her rise to fourth fastest in the world rankings.

It was the first time in the 74-year history of the Championships that Swiss woman have taken medals.

In the men's events, Remo Lütolf set a new Swiss record in the 50m breaststroke semifinals. The 20-year old topped the qualifiers for Friday's fina with a time of 28.12 seconds.
