Coldest January recorded for almost 25 years
Switzerland, currently under a blanket of snow, has experienced its coldest January for almost a quarter of a century.
The average temperature in this icy and snowy month was more than -1 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature.
The lowest temperature of the winter was recorded on La Brévine in the Jura on the morning of February 1 at -34.8 degrees.
Temperatures did not reach the low of January 1987, when the Swiss shivered to -3 degrees below the normal temperature. However, this is still milder than the infamous January of 1963 in which Zurich was 4.5 degrees under the norm and Basel five degrees under.
Experts say more cold weather is to come. “There is no sign of spring yet,” said Felix Blumer from SF Meteo, the German-speaking public television weather service.
