Danger lies within this mountain: the entire village of Mitholz, in canton Bern, is expected to be evacuated in 2030 to allow the safe clearing of a WWII-era ammunition depot hidden in the rock above. A new analysis suggests the risk of a catastrophic explosion – as occurred in 1947 – is lower than previously feared. However, the federal government is maintaining all precautionary measures.
