Appenzell Inner Rhodes has made history: Angela Koller (centre, with glasses) on Sunday became the first woman to be elected as the eastern canton’s Landammann (equivalent to mayor) by the local Landesgemeinde – an open-air assembly where citizens vote on cantonal matters with a show of hands.
Koller is the former president of the Swiss Employees’ Association and member of the Grand Council. She will succeed Roland Inauen, who is stepping down after twelve years in office.
