Swiss advance in US Open

Roger Federer has won his second round match at the US Open tennis tournament in New York.

After an easy start Federer had to battle through the second and third sets to finally beat Thiago Alves of Brazil 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 on Friday.

Federer has won the past four tournaments at Arthur Ashe Stadium and is still on track to face the new world number one Rafael Nadal in the final on September 7.

Patty Schnyder, ranked 15th, also won her match on Friday, defeating Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Tenth-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka, Federer’s doubles partner in Beijing, is through to the next round after beating American Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
