Libyan sanctions toughened in line with UN

Switzerland has agreed to enforce wide-ranging Libyan sanctions already adopted at an international level.

The measures come into force on Thursday and follow resolutions agreed by the United Nations Security Council and separate measures taken by the European Union.

Resolutions 1970 and 1973 adopted by the UN stipulate a no-fly zone, an arms embargo, financial sanctions and travel restrictions for specific Libyans.

In addition the EU has introduced a ban on supplying any materials that could be used to repress the Libyan population and has expanded the list of people subject to an asset freeze and a travel ban.

Switzerland has already frozen assets belonging to various Libyans and any assets that could profit Moammar Gaddafi and his clan. The cabinet noted that in adopting the UN and EU sanctions, it was complying with international law.
