Swiss pursue 2022 Winter Olympics dream

Switzerland has reacted to PyeongChang's victory as 2018 Winter Olympics host by stepping up its campaign to hold the 2022 event.

Swiss Olympic, the umbrella association of Swiss sport organisations, believes South Korea’s win on Wednesday will improve Europe’s chances of being the next host.

“We are still closely studying the conditions for a successful Swiss candidacy for the 2022 Olympic Games,” the organisation said in a statement.

Swiss Olympic says its executive committee will choose a preferred candidate on August 11.

A joint bid from the resorts of Davos and St. Moritz and a city-based candidacy in Geneva are on a shortlist of five options.

The elected venue will need further approval from Switzerland’s sport federations at a meeting next spring.

Switzerland has two Winter Games to its name, in 1928 and 1948, when the Olympics were held in St Moritz. But bids by Valais in 1976, 2002 and 2006 failed. Anger and disappointment were particularly high when the 2006 games went to Turin in neighbouring Italy.
