Switzerland urges Milosevic to hand over power

Switzerland has joined other countries in calling on the Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic, to step down and hand over power to the opposition leader, Vojislav Kostunica.

Speaking after returning from Sweden, the Swiss foreign minister, Joseph Deiss, urged Milosevic to ensure a peaceful transition of power. He told German-Swiss television that the Yugoslav government should not use force against the people, or deny the will of the people.

He made the statement as tens of thousands of opposition supporters stormed the federal parliament and other key buildings in an attempt to force Milosevic from power in the wake of his refusal to accept his defeat in the presidential elections ten days ago.
