Zurich's zoo plans to broadcast the birth of an elephant calf live on the Internet next month. The zoo describes the event as an Internet premiere.
The zoo says it will start carrying pictures "within the next few days" on its website (see below) because the exact date of the birth is uncertain. Those who are eager not to miss the event can leave an e-mail address or phone number where they can be contacted when the birth is getting under way.
The event is part of a campaign by the zoo to draw attention to the dwindling number of Asian elephants -- currently between 40,000 and 50,000 -- as humans increasingly encroach on their natural habitat.
