Biggest ever single hashish find at Zurich airport

Zurich customs officials show off the drugs haul of over 800 kilogramms of Hashish Keystone

Zurich customs officials have made the largest-ever single seizure of hashish at Zurich airport. They made the discovery of 817 kilogrammes of the drug on July 13, the authorities disclosed on Tuesday.

The Zurich cantonal police said the hashish, which had been packaged in cartons, was on its way to Canada from South Africa via Zurich’s Kloten airport. The cannabis resin was tightly wrapped in 15 boxes which also contained mechanical spare parts.

A spokesman for the police said the drugs haul was made after weeks of intensive investigations. He said the drugs were being stored in a secure depot in Zurich and would eventually be destroyed in a furnace.

According to the police official, 58 kilogrammes of hashish were seized at Zurich airport in the first six months of this year.

The street value of the hashish is put at up to SFr6,000 per kilogramme.

Andrea Canonica of the anti-narcotics smuggling unit of the Border Guards explained that most of the cannabis seized at Switzerland’s borders is in transit. “A lot of cannabis is produced in Switzerland itself,” he said, “so the import market is very small.”
