Swiss hockey hopes put on ice in Davos
The 84th Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament will see SKA St Petersburg battle Team Canada on Friday after the last Swiss competitors lost in the semifinals
The Canadians dominated action on Thursday with a 4-0 win over 14-time winner HC Davos. Earlier in the day St Petersburg dispatched Servette Geneva 4-3 in overtime.
Josh Holden and Pascal Pelletier connected in the first period while Mark Bell and Jean-Pierre Vigier scored in the second to seal the Canadian victory. The North Americans had previously lost to Davos 3-2 in the preliminaries. Last year Davos lost in the finals 1-3 to Dynamo Minsk.
The Canadians have won the tournament 11 times so far, the last being in 2007 with a 2-1 victory over Salavat Yulaev Ufa. In 2008 Team Canada lost to Dynamo Moscow 3-5.They now face the undefeated Russians on Friday.
The Spengler Cup began in 1923 and is the world’s oldest professional ice hockey tournament. It pits a Canadian national team composed primarily of professionals against European club teams on their Christmas break.
