Swiss ski coaches injured in Sweden
Four Swiss alpine ski coaches have been injured in a car crash near the Swedish ski resort of Åre.
A Swiss team representative said Steve Locher and Curdin Fasser were seriously injured when their minibus crashed into a truck on Wednesday morning.
Two other coaches, Reto Nydegger and Werner Zurbuchen, received lighter injuries.
Suffering a fractured pelvis and cervical fracture, Locher – who won a bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville – was flown to a specialised clinic in Upsala where he was to be operated on. Fasser was diagnosed with skull and brain injuries and has a broken leg and bruised lung. He is being treated in the university hospital in Umeå.
The Swedish Ski Association cancelled Wednesday’s Europa Cup slalom due to the accident, but decided to go ahead with Thursday’s event. The Swedish alpine ski director Niklas Carlsson called the accident “incredibly tragic”.
