Switzerland has long been a key hub for goods transportation, and today local specialists work well beyond its borders.
Switzerland – due to its central location in Europe – has long been a key staging point for the transportation and transiting of goods. As a result, sophisticated local companies have extended their reach far beyond the country’s borders. With manufacturers sub-contracting more and more work abroad, especially for spare parts, transport now represents an increasing share of production costs. Kühne & Nagel or Panalpina are among the giants of their sector, although relatively unknown to the public at large. But their their impact spreads far beyond Switzerland’s borders.
4% is the share of Switzerland’s Gross Domestic Product represented by the transport, shipping and logistics sector.
65% of goods transiting through Switzerland travel by rail, whereas the European average is just 16%.
