The African footprint of Swiss refineries
Out of Switzerland’s gold refineries accredited with the , Metalor has the largest footprint in Africa. The non-governmental organisation Swissaid conducted research over two years to identify key commercial ties between industrial gold mines in Africa and refineries around the world. That type of data is jealously guarded by many refineries but more willingly shared by mining companies and specialised databases. The NGO is one of many pushing for greater transparency in the gold sector so that human rights abuses and environmental damage can be remedied.
