Annan to be made honorary citizen of Geneva
Geneva's government has put forward a proposal to have this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kofi Annan, made honorary citizen of the lakeside city.
The proposal will have to be ratified by Geneva’s parliament in order for it to come into effect.
The head of Geneva’s government, Micheline Calmy-Rey, stressed the bonds between Annan and the city. She evoked his days as a student at the University Institute for Higher International Studies, from which he graduated with an economics diploma.
“This honorary citizenship is to be given to Mr. Annan for his important role in promoting world peace,” said Calmy-Rey.
The honorary citizenship has been given to other leaders of international organisations, including Francis Blanchard, of the International Labour Organisation and Halfdan Mahler of the World Health Organisation.
