Swiss biologist wins prestigious science award
The Swiss biologist, Meinrad Busslinger, has been awarded the prestigious Wittgenstein Prize at a ceremony in the Austrian capital, Vienna.
The prize, worth SFr1.8 million ($1 million), was given to Busslinger in recognition of his research into the formation of blood cells.
Busslinger, who was presented the award by the Austrian research minister, Elisabeth Gehrer, is attached to the Vienna-based Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP).
The Swiss scientist is one of a team of researchers based at the IMP, all of whom carry out advanced studies into which mechanisms ensure normal blood cell development and how these mechanisms are disrupted in cancer cells.
The IMP, which attracts scientists and research graduates from around the world, is sponsored by the international pharmaceutical company, Boehringer Ingelheim.
