ADtranz boss in Switzerland to discuss redundancies

The boss of the German rail technology group, ADtranz, is in Zurich to tackle a growing dispute over his decision to axe over 700 jobs in Switzerland.

The boss of the German rail technology group, ADtranz, is in Zurich to tackle a growing dispute over his decision to axe over 700 jobs in Switzerland.

Rolf Eckrodt held talks with the management of Adtranz Switzerland before meeting trade unions and cantonal officials.

On his arival, he was greeted by an angry protest by workers from the company’s factory in Oerlikon.

Adtranz’s announcement last week that it would close its plants in Oerlikon and Pratteln, at a cost of more than 700 jobs, prompted outrage in Switzerland.

The company said the redundancies were part of a necessary restructuring programme to cut costs and boost profitability.

The Swiss government, which accused Adtranz of opportunism, has been urged by the trade unions to step up the pressure on the German concern.
